CYPRUS in BRIEF History The strategic position of the country, at the crossroads of three continents has probably been the main reason for its turbulent history throughout the ages. Many different races, the main ones being the Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines, Francs, Venetians, Turks and British, have occupied the island. Although each one of these conquerors left their mark on the island, the Greek identity has been preserved throughout the ages. In 1960, it gained independence under the London-Zurich agreement. But freedom was short-lived. In 1974, after an abortive coup d'etat, Turkey invaded and occupied 38% of the island's territory in the north. Although, the problem has not yet been resolved, political and economic stability were fully restored soon after the invasion. Geography Considered a European country, it is situated in the eastern region of the Mediterranean at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. The island's total area is 9251 square kilometres while the island time zone is exactly 2 hours ahead of London and 7 hours behind Tokyo. The landscape is one of infinite contrasts, from its fertile central plain to the cool, vine clad foothills; the majesty of the cedar valley in which wild indigenous moufflon roam; mile after mile of sandy shores with secluded beaches to seek out, and hundreds of villages to explore, each with its own tradition and charm. Climate This beautiful country enjoys perhaps the best type of Mediterranean climate with about 340 warm and sunny days. Summer is the season of constant sunshine and cloudless skies. Winters are mild with some rain, and snowfall on Troodos Mountains. Maximum mean temperatures range from 14C or 57F in January to 37C or 99F in July and August. Standard and Cost of living Cyprus enjoys a fairly high European standard of living, while at the same time remains a relatively inexpensive country. According to a survey conducted by the Union Bank of Switzerland it is ranked as the 10th least expensive business centre in the world and the least expensive in the whole of Europe. Real Estate a non Cypriot is allowed to buy in Cyprus A non-Cypriot is allowed to buy a flat, house or a plot of land not exceeding two donums, 2676 square metres. However, in case there is a special reason and you need more than the law states, permission may be granted. Freehold All the properties for sale in Cyprus are freehold. Currency The currency is the Pound, which is sub-divided into 100 cents. As from June 1992, the exchange rate of the currency has been pegged to the ECU. The margin within which the currency is allowed to fluctuate has been fixed at 2.25% above or below the central value, 1.7068 ECU. Unlike the rest of the US it has been in the doldrums since 2001 as the dot com and telecommunications busts have really affected the Denver metro area. Latest economic statistics, however, show that the local economy is almost back up to the boom years of the late nineties and 2000. Employment is up, available jobs are up and commercial estate vacancies are down. As the local economy picks up, it is anticipated that the Denver real estate market will follow. Unlike many other regions in the last few years, the Denver metro area has seen very modest house price growth of around 3%. As coastal communities have become unaffordable for the vast majority of the population, today Denver is seen to be affordable and undervalued. So combine the real estate slowdown (or pullback) the rest of the US is anticipating and that there are a lot of families who cant afford to buy or upgrade in their existing communities with the economic growth forecast for the Denver area, you can see how Denver offers a great relocation opportunity for many families. Relocating to Denver can be a great option for families. Indeed history tells us that those in California, the North East, Texas, Illinois and Minnesota will relocate to Denver as their own economies or housing markets hit rocky patches. They are attracted to Colorado by the great lifestyle, weather and job opportunities the Denver metro area offers. Editorial Rating: Recommended The Scene Dark-wood accents, a Western motif and a large fireplace decorate the bustling, sprawling restaurant. Decibel levels manage to remain low enough for conversation. Service can be inconsistent, despite a large staff. The Food Texas onion strings features tangy and spicy pale-pink dipping sauce combining liquid smoke, mayonnaise and barbecue sauce. The average smoked sirloin nachos are served with generous amounts of refreshing pico de gallo and jalapenos. The succulent signature pepper-smoked sirloin lives up to its reputation with well-absorbed flavor. A side of chili, however, can arrive bland and lukewarm, while undercooked, bitter spinach is smothered in butter. Two eight-ounce mesquite-grilled pork chops are spicy-sweet with a peach glaze coating the tender meat exquisitely. The accompanying sweet mashed potatoes are delightfully creamy. Jack Daniel's pie is strong, chunky and topped with vanilla ice cream. Editorial content is independent of paid advertisers. Any expenses are paid for by Citysearch. Posted by nealla on 10/17/2003 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful I am completely baffled by the negative reviews I see here. We have eaten at Texas L&C between 20 and 25 times and have never once had poor food or service. Their Mesquite Grilled Shrimp are simply the best anywhere, and I highly recommend the Trail Quail and the grilled chicken as well. This is one of my family's favorite restaurants. Please give it a try.
