You cannot obtain clear title without in some way dealing with all existing liens. When you purchased the property, you very likely paid off all of the liens. If there are still liens against the property that were there before you purchased the property, then you do not have clear title. This is supposed to be stated in the realestate listing. If this is the case then you would lose your earnest money if you back out of the contract.
