Composer James Horner takes the medium-budget project as an opportunity to break with much of the melodic expectations of his Hollywood fare, coloring the film's more personally-scaled drama with an introspective score that turns on masterful musical evocations of mood and emotion. Horner begins with a deft electronic/orchestral synthesis ("An Older Life") that both recalls some of T-Dream's more evocative cinematic moments and subtly sets up the score's melancholy emotional tone. From there he relies heavily on autumnal, string writing (reminiscent of Copland and Barber) and spare piano flourishes, seasoned with inventive rhythmic touches, to carry its moody tone forward. I used to be a huge Horner fan and picked up most of his new albums until about five years ago, when I felt he lost his magic. Most of his recent scores have sounded like they were on autopilot, and I still remember my horror at seeing Enemy at the Gates and hearing his main theme, also known as the main theme from Schindler's List. Now, I know, there are a thousand arguments about why film music is not always meant to sound totally original, and that Williams may have even borrowed some of his Schindler's melodies from elsewhere. It's all a matter of personal taste and I just haven't been moved by a Horner score for a while. When I saw this beautifully crafted film, however, I was struck by the simplicity and emotional depth of Horner's work. It reminds me a great deal of his beautiful score for Deep Impact. I was also glad to not hear tunes he'd used previously elsewhere. Although this doesn't have any of the driving, epic, thematic music Horner became a star for, like Titanic, it's a hauntingly beautiful work and is certainly worth picking up, especially for the wrenching final half-hour of the film, which is almost entirely scored. With the scores for "Enemy at the Gates", "Radio", and "A Beautiful Mind", among others, Horner borrows heavily from himself and regurgitates old themes and progressions. Even the score for which he's perhaps best-known -- the Oscar-winning "Titanic" -- is heavily derivative of his own previous work. Finally, with "House of Sand and Fog," Horner has given us something to treasure again: an original, moving score for a great film. Listening to this music, I am reminded why I started following Horner's work so long ago. His subtle touch and avoidance of a "catchy" theme is evident in every track. Among my favorite pieces are "Two People," "The Dreams of Kings," and "Old Photos, New Memories"... but really, every song is a good one, and the album as a whole can be numbered as one of Horner's true masterpieces. What I admired most about it was that Horner was able to abandon the style he has adopted for most of his recent work and just let the spirit of the film take over. Good film music is all about making music which evokes the right emotion for the film it accompanies, and the music for "House of Sand and Fog" does that perfectly, not only going along with but enhancing the feeling of each scene. The fact that the music is a joy to listen to on its own just makes it that much better. Listening to James Horner's score for "House of Sand and Fog" reminds me of when I first listened to "Glory" and "Field of Dreams" and "Sneakers"... not because these scores are similar, but because they are all unique. They all bear the mark of James Horner, but it is Horner at his original and emotional best, and James Horner at the top of his game makes for some wonderful music. Was this review helpful to you? Quiet, elegant, melancholy, moving: not words you'd use to describe a movie soundtrack, especially a wide-release flick like this, these days. I even agree that some of the pieces remind me of Gorecki. "The Waves of the Caspian Sea," for example, sounds remarkably like the Polish composer (one of my favorites, too), to the point that I almost expect to see his name in the credits. I think he borrows heavily from himself without ever stating anything new. This isn't always a problem if the composer takes his "internal themes" and transfers in an invigorating way to new material. But for me, Horner doesn't do that. With this score for THOSF, Horner really hits one home. I actually had to look at the cd just to make sure it really said "music composed by James Horner", this is so beautiful and different for him. As others have said, all of the tracks really are beautiful. This isn't the type of score you put on as background music nor something you listen to to Not think. This score is emotive and heavily melancholic. It reminds me of Gorecki's Symphony No.2, and if you know that piece of music, you know there's no a higher compliment I can pay this score. (BTW, if you're interested in a composer doing new and exciting things check out Danny Elfman's score for The Hulk, his score that should've been nominated over his mediocre one for Big Fish.) ( Report this ) 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful: OSCAR CONSTENDER!!!! , December 10, 2003 Reviewer: A music fan (somewheres) This soundtrack is deep in emotion, but extremely subtle and "underplayed"- a beautiful and very relaxing work. Listen to it in the dark! It is come of the most calming music! And for all you Horner fans out there - he does not borrow any real theme or even transitions (until the 15 minute track - "the Shooting, and Payment for our sins" where there is actually one statement from the missing score). Other than that his style is pretty much the same even though a lot less melodic and more like Lisa Gerrard's WHALERIDER, or DRAGONFLY by Debney. The instruments used are piano (there is wonderful piano solo in "TWO PEOPLE", string orchestra with synths and a tiny bit of oboe and flute. Also a neat touch for the tension motif is the plucking of strings along w/ timpani! If you like darker, ambient and personal scores get this today!!!! Was this review helpful to you? Carol Mann Sales director SIPPS - Residential Property and Pensions It is now possible to purchase residential property in both the UK and overseas utilizing a Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) as long as completion does not take place before 6th April 2006. This means that your pension can buy property off plan today. The main requirements are as follows: The property must satisfy the lawyers and trustees in respect of due diligence ie the property or development must satisfy the necessary legal requirements such as planning permission, legal title, building licenses etc If let, the property should be managed by a professional letting and/or management company For property located in the UK, the income (rent) received will be free of income tax, and on the future sale of the property there will be no capital gains tax on the profit. For property located overseas, the tax position is yet to be fully clarified, but it is anticipated that there will be an element of income and capital gains tax that cannot be reclaimed if the purchase is overseas and that countrys tax regime dictates that income and capital gains tax is chargeable on investment property. The precise position in relation to taxation will be clarified later this year. Your SIPP will be able to borrow up to 50% of the total fund to assist with a property purchase. However, most trustees will require absolute certainty that the monies will be available in your pension fund at completion. This could be in the form of an unconditional mortgage offer at the time of paying the deposit, or a certainty that you or your company will make a contribution in the next tax year (when contribution limits and subsequent tax relief is greater than in the current tax year). It is also possible for individuals to collectively purchase property with other individuals pension funds. This syndication is straightforward and enables people who have smaller pension funds to pool resources. Some practical points if you dont already have all your funds in the right type of SIPP: You may have several pension schemes with a number of different insurers. Before you can consider a property purchase, you will need to transfer some or all of your pension funds to a SIPP with a company who have confirmed that they will allow you buy residential property now. In order to avoid any delay, and ensure that you buy your chosen property at the best possible price, it is possible for you to pay a reservation fee and initial deposit(s) from your own resources, and the property to be purchased from you, by your pension after April 2006. This will enable you and your adviser time to affect the necessary transfers to the SIPP to ensure that funds are available before completion. You will of course need to ensure that you will have sufficient monies in order to complete the transaction and cover all anticipated costs. Please ask us for further details if required. When the pension purchases the contract from you, this may create a chargeable event (we anticipate that the property will have increased in value between now and next April) and hence you may be liable for capital gains tax. This could be an opportunity for you to realize gains within your annual CGT exemption. For example, a purchase at one of our golf resorts would currently cost approximately £125,000. Assuming that prices increased by 6% between now and April 2006, the market value would be £132,500 and this is the price that the pension would have to pay. This would create a taxable gain of £7,500 which is within the annual exemption and would be tax free (assuming that you have made no other gains in the current tax year). If you purchase the property jointly, you could make gains of up to £17,000 without paying any capital gains tax. This gain could be invested in your pension in the next tax year (as a contribution), and enjoy tax relief. For a basic rate taxpayer, this would gross up to £9,615 and for a higher rate tax payer, £12,500. Hence, by acting now, you could effectively fund around 10% of the purchase price with some simple yet legitimate tax planning. If you have high earnings, paying tax at 40% (and available capital now), rather than paying £125,000 for a property, you could, through pension contributions post April 2006, pay as little as £67,500 for a property purchased today at £125,000 by a combination of the above, and the higher rate relief available on your post A day contribution. This equates to an immediate gain of 54%. You need to accept that the actual structure of the purchase and precise taxation implications have yet to be clarified for overseas property. It is confirmed however, that the purchase can take place, provided the property is deemed by the trustee to be suitable. Syndication We believe that there will be a great demand for collective property purchase, for people who want to combine a sound financial investment with the ability to use a property abroad for occasional personal use, but dont have sufficient funds in their own plans. For an additional fee, you can syndicate with other people to jointly own property and pool your resources. These other people could be family members, friends or colleagues. Because of the charges and other practical implications, we anticipate that this will be available to people who have a minimum fund value of around £25,000. Beneficiaries on death do not have to be the other syndicated owners, but the relevant documentation needs to be in place to deal with things like retirement and death in much the same way as company directors effect a shareholders agreement to clarify these issues. For both the beginner and expert, knowing where to buy plants from, and how to select which plants to purchase is extremely important. Below are some general tips to follow when selecting new plants. The Nursery Sometimes finding a supplier can be difficult. The following are some things to look for in a nursery or plant shop. Is the staff knowledgeable? Can they answer your questions and provide you with advice? Plants grown from a knowledgeable staff will be healthy and well cared for. Also a knowledgeable staff can be helpful in helping you select the right plant. What condition are their plants in? Even if the particular plant you like is healthy, if many of the other plants in the store are in poor condition it is best to move on and find a different place to shop. For online or mail order vendors, be especially aware of the vendor’s reputation. Also, pay attention to the size plant you are getting, and look for the shipping method and return policy. The Plant Selecting the right plant to buy can often be a difficult decision. Below are some key points to examine when selecting your plant. Will this plant fit my conditions? Before going plant shopping, first consider what your home growing conditions (e.g. light, humidity, temperature, etc.) are like, and look for plants that fit those conditions. When shopping read the tags on the plants, and look for plants with needs that fit your home environment. If you are not sure, don’t hesitate to ask the vendor for advice. Is the plant free of disease and pests? Before purchase, carefully examine the plant for signs of disease or pests. Never purchase a plant that shows any signs of sickness or pest contamination. What is the condition of the leaves/stem? Does the plant have leaf burn, brown tips, dried or mushy brown leaves? Is the stem healthy and well-formed? Is the plant compact and bushy, or tall and leggy? Look for healthy plants with healthy well-formed foliage. Avoid any plants that look damaged or are missing a lot of leaves. What is the condition of the roots? Take a peek at the roots. Are the roots healthy and well-formed? Does the soil smell fresh or rotten? Never purchase a plant with black or rotted roots, and beware of severely root-bound plants, or of plants with poorly developed root systems. What is the soil like? Is the plant’s soil bone-dry, or is it soaking wet? Plants that are not watered may show signs of wilt, while those that are sitting in water may have developed root rot. Is there new growth/flower buds? Look for plants with signs of healthy new growth. When purchasing flowers, look for ones with unopened buds so that you can enjoy the flowers for a longer period of time.
